Happiness Day: How to avoid depression – Expert

Aisha Bubah, Counselling Psychologist, Network for Psychosocial Support, Africa (NPS-Africa), has advised Nigerians to take care of their mental health to avoid depression.

Ms. Bubah said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja to commemorate the International Happiness Day.

“If one is in a happy state means less of troubles, stress and better well-being; if one is unhappy there will be depression, suicide, anxiety and stress disorder.

“Depression is a significant problem that has affected some youths which has made them to be drug addicts.

“Drug addiction is being experimented due to the poor state of mental health and seeks temporary pleasure and satisfaction,” she said.

Ms. Bubah said there cannot be health without mental health, saying one should be surrounded with positive people for well-being.

Besides, she urged Nigerians to share their thoughts with positive people to enhance their mental health.

“Constantly surrounding yourself with positive people will help manage stress. Buying expensive clothes, jewelleries will not bring permanent happiness.

We need to create time for relaxation and look beyond the economic situation of the country; we need to focus on positive in every bad situation,” Ms. Bubah counselled.

She said being happy impact on one’s level of productivity at workplace, adding that happiness also impact relationship with people.

However, she advised Nigerians to avoid sedentary lifestyle to be happy as it could cause more harm than good.

The International Day of Happiness is commemorated on March 20, annually by the United Nations to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

The end of my infertility after many years of waiting and hoping

Finally I am glad I can say I am fulfilled as a true African woman. Of course, my joy knows no bound as I share this experience with you. But honestly, I can’t hold tears from my eye as I write this because of the panic, worry, and worst of all the shame I have been through in recent past.

I don’t know what brings you joy but I could say to you that I have been made to believe that only children who are God’s heritage can bring a married couple extreme joy. This is the belief of the family member that surrounded me.

http://wellnessportal.com.ng/female.html I had my wedding on the 23RD of October 2010. It was a church wedding and was celebrated on a low key, since we weren’t that buoyant. I am proud to say that I was a virgin till the eve of my honeymoon, this was one of the respect I got from my husband that made him kept faith in me throughout the period of my fruitlessness.

The end of my infertility after many years of waiting and hoping

Four months after my wedding, I was getting worried that I was yet to conceive, although my husband calmed me down and will turn down the suggestion of a medical examinations. At a point I concluded that the fault was from him which I presumed was his reason for declining the test. He is a part-time pastor, so he preaches faith a lot to me and would give me consolatory words. I had no one else to run to but him, since I have lost my parents. http://wellnessportal.com.ng/female.html

At exactly a year and four months of our marriage, that should be around February 2012, my mother-in-law and one of my sisters-in-law paid us a visit. My mother-in-law asked if I had taken in before but had miscarriage. I responded “no”. She asked about my present status which I told her was still the same. She felt so concerned and demanded that I followed her to the village for some medication. I couldn’t do that because of my job. She seems to understand but left for the village the following dayand returned with a hamper full of herbs and various roots, some to be boiled for drinking and bathing, some to be chewed before sex and others to be prepared for eating. I was choice-less because of my predicament, so I succumbed to doing her wish, with the permission and encouragement from my husband.

This lasted for several months with no tangible result. My mother-in-law did not hide her frustration and disbelieve in me after 2 years of our marriage. She told her son to get another that could bare him children. It was after this pressure that my husband subscribed to the idea of going to the hospital for medical check-up.

The end of my infertility after many years of waiting and hoping

On December 4, 2012, we had an appointment with the doctor. After series of questioning we were examined. I would not lie to you; it came to me as a shock when the result showed that my husband was 100% normal but there was a problem in my uterus, which had being affecting my ovulation. He asked me series of questions such as; if I was eating regularly, if I was drinking, smoking, or undergoing stress.

It was obvious I didn’t have excessive weight. The only cause for worry was my extreme brief menstrual cycles. I was told that there was need to address my short menstrual cycle by taking some anti-biotic or supplements. After this I was made to undergo a minor surgery, since he said there was a blockage in my uterus.

To cut the long story short, all this efforts proved abortive, as I remained barren. My husband was no longer having the patience he used to have for me any longer. Though, he could not send me parking because of his position in the church.

On March 20, 2014, I was in a seminal talk for expecting mothers when the speaker spoke about the benefits of some supplements. I was so interested that I raised question pertaining to my condition. He suggested I get some help from this site http://wellnessportal.com.ng/female.html. With reluctance, I gave it a trial. Well, I was proven wrong as the very choice I took that day will always remain the best I have ever taken in my life. After taking the supplements for about four and half month to the glory of the Lord, I became pregnant. My husband was so happy when we found out on the August 14, 2014 that I had taken in.

The end of my infertility after many years of waiting and hoping

Today I am a proud mother of twins.

Please I encourage women, with my condition, to patronize natural supplements (visit http://wellnessportal.com.ng/female.html). It has worked for me. I believe by God’s grace it will work for you.

Dry skin and hair remedies eating certain foods.

In the last article it was promised that information on the foods that improve moisture and reduce dry skin and hair would be shared.  This can be remedied in a myriad of ways (oils, creams, hydrating masks), but for a more holistic approach, take a minute to consider what you’re eating — and drinking.

We all know that eating well has its obvious benefits, but around this time of year when pie and stuffing consumption are at an all-time high, it can be, admittedly, a little hard.

But now with some down time from this most recent carb-filled holiday and the next one, try loading up on foods that will actually do some good by way of shiny, healthy hair and hydrated skin.

There is no magic food what will keep us looking hydrated and moisturised hence younger for longer, but diet and lifestyle and attitude does affect how your skin looks and ages.

Research is now showing that it’s possible to influence your looks simply by choosing specific foods. Hair growth (and fallout), skin collagen production, hormone balance and more are all tied to what you choose to eat.

First thing to know, don’t skimp on rich, healthy ingredients this season, even if you are trying to slim down or maintain a healthy weight.  That’s important to understand with respect to eating whole foods because they contain tons of nutrients, phytochemicals and enzymes that work synergistically to keep us healthy.

Here are our must-eats to help you get your glowing skin.

Water and tea – fluid: Drinking lots of water hydrates the body and plumps up the skin, thus making it younger looking and moisturised. Non sugary tea adds up to this hydration as well.  Our bodies are made up of over 50% of water. So we need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Work it up to 3 litres of water a day.

Protein foods – Skin, hair and nails are mostly protein. These proteins – keratin, collagen and elastin – ward off wrinkles and provide strength and elasticity.  Most of us eat plenty of protein from meat, chicken, fish legumes, eggs and dairy foods.

Sea foods – essential fats:

The body needs fat- healthy fats, the essential omega -3 and  omega -6 fats.  Not the greasy pastry and pie type, or oil soaked African vegetable soup, this can be tweaked by reducing the amount of oil added to your vegetable soup.  A suggested just measure of 2 laden spoons of oil to a 5 litre pot of soup would do.  If you have dry, itchy scalp or skin, you may not be eating enough of these.  They are called essential fats because the body cannot make them; you have to eat them.

Both omega 3 and omega 6 fats produce hormone- like substances called prostaglandins, which then change into other substances that affect immunity and inflammation in the body.  Omega 3 fats suppress inflammation, immune responses and blood clotting.  Omega- 6 fats are also essential for healthy skin, but too much can cause inflammation and allergic reactions.

Fatty Fish:

Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids have incredible beauty benefits, including glowing skin and shiny strands. About three percent of the hair shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re found in cell membranes on your scalp and in the natural oils that keep your scalp and hair hydrated. While salmon is usually the superstar choice, Foy says mackerel, sardines and anchovies are even better. ‘They’re great because they’re at the bottom of the food chain, so they’re not living

Iron – vitality and lustre: Tired and lacking in energy?  This may be a symptom of low iron.  Hair nails and skin can also suffer if you’re lacking in iron.  Skin may be very pale, become itchy, or there could be cracking at the side of the mouth. Nails can become brittle and develop vertical stripes, or even become spoon – shaped.   You could shed more hair and it will be noticeably more dry, brittle and dull.

Meat is the best source of iron: the redder the meat, the more iron it contains.  If you do not eat meat, you can get iron from legumes and whole grains but it is less readily absorbed, so add vitamin C from pure fruit juice, fruit and capsicum to meals to enhance absorption.

Muesli – whole grains, millet as well.

Nuts – nutrition nuggets – Walnuts – These nuts have omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which help the body retain moisture, giving your hair a healthy-looking shine. The protein content of the walnuts helps boost hair follicles, making hair fuller and stronger. Nuts are packed with essential fats, vitamin E and B vitamins

Citrus fruits: Vitamin C is essential to make collagen, the structural cement of the body.  Under the skin, collagen is the fibrous tissue that plumps it up giving support and shape.  As skin ages it loses collagen.

When we breathe car fumes, cigarette smoke and lie in the sun, harmful oxidation reactions happen in our skin and body. Vitamin C, E and beta carotene are potent antioxidants that mop up the harmful by – products of oxidation and slow down damage to the skin.  Large doses of vitamins C,E and beta help protect the skin from sunburn and improve its resilience to things that could irritate it.  But when taken as supplements, sometimes the antioxidant activity shifts to harmful pro-oxidant activity.  How to prevent this?  Skip the pills and eat lots of antioxidant – rich fruits and vegetables. – Oranges grapefruits, lemons.

Orange, yellow, red and green coloured foods– vitamin A

Paw paw is super food for the skin. It is the betacarotene, which gives carrots, pumpkin, mango and spinach their healthy skin image.  If you have dry hair and skin, take a look at how much coloured fruit and vegetables and other vitamin A rich foods you are eating.  Go for liver, oily fish and egg yolk.

Melons and tomatoes which contain lycopenes are great for the skin for example carrot and watermelon juice would perhaps be a good option of juice for the skin.

Carotenoids (elements in yellow fruits and vegetables like carrots) and flavonoids help protect the skin against UV damage and can improve skin hydration and condition.  For well hydration skin, hair and nails, drink plenty of water. Water aids circulation and delivery of nutrients.

Red Bell Peppers

Did you know that red peppers contain far more skin-boosting vitamin C than oranges? ‘Vitamin C is a pre-cursor to collagen production and is also an antioxidant. When light hits your skin, it creates free radicals. These bounce around inside your skin and lead to DNA damage, which turns into aging. The antioxidants attach themselves to free radicals and neutralize them so that they can’t do damage.

Berries are loaded with anti-inflammatory agents and vitamins that help protect you from premature aging. The antioxidants in berries help minimize the damage of free radicals, which can accelerate wrinkle formation and cause disease. Additionally, berries are packed with vitamin C, which helps produce skin that’s firm and strong. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a nutrient that’s essential to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels.

Sweet potatoes:  It can help boost immunity and promote glowing, gorgeous skin. Full of beta-carotene, sweet potatoes can help maintain bright, healthy eyes and protect your beautiful skin from UV exposure. Sweet potatoes are bursting with Vitamins A, C, and E, which can help improve the look of your hair and skin. Enjoy these nutritious spuds steamed, baked, sautéed, or roasted into sweet potato fries (my favorite!).

Part 2 to be continued… stay hydrated. above all eat smart, move more.

Drinking Coconut Water Will Turn a Child into an Olodo (Dunce)

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard this before:

“Don’t eat that _______________ (fill in the blank with seemingly harmless food or fruit).  It will make you ___________________________.” (fill in the blank with completely unnatural and very negative, undesirable bodily or mental functions).

What?! I’m the only one raising my hand?

Sacre bleu! I refuse to believe this.

Seriously, growing up I heard all sorts of myths and taboos surrounding food.  It just so happens that one of those myths has to do with a certain fruit.

Take a wild guess ….

If you said garden egg, you’re absolutely wrong! I was referring to Coconut.  You know, that white fleshy fruit encased in a hairy hard brown shell.

Whoa! So many adjectives to describe one fruit!

I was told not to drink coconut water because it would make a person an olodo.  Can you believe that? Ordinary omi agbon(coconut water) had the mind-boggling ability to transform an intelligent person or at least, a person of average intelligence into a Dodoyo (pronounced Duh-Duh-Yaw) … or Olodo (pronounced Oh-Low-Doh).  A person who makes zero over ten (0/10) in Maths.  Not Further Maths (Calculus).

Olodo means “Dunce” or “Dullard” in Yoruba, in case you were wondering.

Also referred to as coconut juice, Coconut water is the water in the coconut when you gbosa! i.e. Slam the coconut on the floor … Or break it open with a cutlass … Or something like that.  In short, it’s the water in the coconut.

Now, if your coconut has no water in it, please return it and get a refund immediately.  Someone drank it before you and deprived you of the joy of savoring the refreshing taste of fresh coconut water.  That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.  😀

If you’ve tasted coconut water in young coconuts (like the one in the picture above) where the flesh has not fully developed and is still really soft, you’ll notice that it tastes quite different from the coconut water in a “mature” coconut.

How can I say “mature” coconut with a straight face? Mwa ha ha ha!

But yes, there is a difference in taste.

So, what about that myth? Oh yes, the myth that drinking coconut water will turn a child (or an adult gan-an) into an olodo.  Is it true?

The answer is No.

Coconut water actually has certain health benefits:

  • Low in Calories
  • Low in Sodium
  • Fat free and Cholesterol free

But, like they say in infommercials, “that’s not all!”

Coconut water is rich in potassium, and therefore can prevent dehydrationpromote heart healthpromote kidney health and prevent aging (but that’s stretching it).

From what I have read, Olodo-ism is not listed as one of its side effects.

So, who came up with this coconut water myth and why?  That is a million dollar question!

What food myths and taboos have you heard before? Please share!

3 Weird Food Facts You Probably Never Knew About

Some foods have pretty much being used for medicinal purposes from ancient times till today.

If you check the history of a number of
foods and compare their life cycle, with their present-day processing, there’s a chance that you will find some weird facts which are actually true.
Here are 3 of the weirdest food facts you
most likely never knew about, brought to you by African Entertainment

  • Tonic Water Glows In Darkness

While this may sound unbelievable, you can actually try it out and discover that it’s true.
The science behind it is the presence of
quinine – a chemical substance that has
long being known as a longstanding
malaria medicine.

Only small quantities of quinine are present
in Tonic water, but it is enough to confer glowing attributes on it if an ultraviolet light is passed through it.

Quinine absorbs light energy that excites molecules present tin the tonic water which emit their own energy
before going inert.
The glow continues once the molecules
receive more light energy.
If you’re thinking of adding fun to your late-night party, you can use the glow-in-the-dark properties of quinine to surprise your friends and pretty much have them look at tonic water in a different way.

Ketchup Was Medicinal And Was Made
Without Tomatoes Modern day bottle’s of ketchup usually have the words “tomato ketchup” written on them and for good reasons too.

Ketchup up has an incredibly weird history that dates back to the 16th century when British sailors discovered the Chinese favorite and introduced it to the Western world.

There were a lot of different regional
recipes and varieties, but the earliest recipe actually contained “the intestine, stomach and bladder of the yellow fish, shark and mullet” to be washed, bottled, and left to sit for up to 100 days!

More so, the British in the past included
anchovies in the making of their ketchup in a process similar to the making of fish sauce.

There was however an immense fear
of including tomatoes in the recipe at this time as a lot of people believed it would be poisonous.

In the 18th century however, some doctors in the United States declared that tomatoes were a quick fix to any form of gastrointestinal issues, which necessitated the inclusion of tomatoes with ketchup and that’s when they were first included in ketchup.

Tomato ketchup was thereafter sold as a
medicinal tonic instead of a condiment.
This however didn’t last long as processing and preservation around this time was so bad that the ketchup became rancid, toxic
and deadly to consumers before more
modern processing techniques was initiated
by Henry J. Heinz.

  • Bananas Are Dying

Bananas are basically genetic clones and the key to genetic diversity is the
continuation of species.

however, we just may not have bananas
around for long because they are basically infertile, inbred clones.

The first Bananas are estimated to have

been domesticated about 7,000 years ago, and humans are understood to have hybridized the banana to grow in various areas as populations spread all around the world.

The Cavendishes bananas at the moment can only be reproduced through transplantation of their tree cuttings.

More so, the identical genetic makeup of
the banana means that a single disease
can wipe out the entire species. Something similar happened in the 1960s when the fusarium wilt banana plague wiped out the Gros Michel species.

The Cavendish bananas were resistant to the fungal strain, but there are other
diseases they aren’t resistant to, like black sigatoka.

The good thing for us all however is that
there are a number of species and varieties of bananas that can replace some, if those eventually gets wiped out.

Some foods have pretty much being used for medicinal purposes from ancient times till today.
If you check the history of a number of
foods and compare their life cycle, withtheir present-day processing, there’s a chance that you will find some weird facts which are actually true.

Sleep duration affects integrity of sperm

A new study found a link between sleep duration and a measure of chromosomal health in sperm . The findings are published in the Journal of Sleep Research .

In the study of 2020 semen samples provided by 796 male volunteers from colleges in Chongqing ( China) from 2013 to 2015, volunteers with more than nine hours per day of sleep and those with 6.5 hours or less per day sleep had 41 per cent and 30 per cent lower High DNA Stainability — an index that represents the proportion of sperm with abnormal chromatin — than did volunteers with seven to 7.5 hours per day of sleep. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins that forms chromosomes .

“This is new information after our previous finding that sleep duration has an inverse U- shaped association with semen volume and total sperm count. In the previous study , we found that these two semen parameters were highest when sleep is 7.0 to 7.5 hours per day , and either longer or shorter sleep was associated with the decrease of the two semen parameters,” said Dr . Jia Cao, co-author of the study .

Tips on How To Successfully Deal With Your Oily Skin

With all the advantages inherent in being blessed with an oily skin, it can be somewhat difficult knowing how to successfully manage it to your benefit.

For a number of good reasons, it is essential to avoid having an excessively ‘shiny’ face and following a proper grooming routine to look fresh and excellent.

If you’re one of those people that struggle with keeping your oily face normal, here are a number of grooming tips that can be of help.

Look For The Right Cleanser

Do your best to avoid facial cleansers that contain oil, dry cleansing agents, fragrance and residue. All these are what you should be looking out for in a cleanser for your oily skincare regimen.

Using your cleansers twice-daily shouldn’t aggravate or dry out your skin. As such, if you’ve found the right cleanser, do your best to be as gentle as possible.

Use a soft washcloth to gently go over your face and body.

This is much better for your face than a rough scrub. Get The Right Exfoliant When excess oil builds up, it tends to clog the skin pores and this results in break-outs of pimples which of course, you should have left in your teenage years.

Anything containing Salicylic acid will do the magic and you should be on the look out for that in an exfoliant.

Gently scrub the the exfoliant into your skin, particularly around the greasy pores around the nose, two or three times a week to get the best result.

Resist The Urge To Wash Your Face All The Time

While it may seem nice to clear off all the oil from your face, regularly washing your face won’t do your skin any favours on the long run. Removing all the sebum that cloggs your pores will only help to increase the production of oil because it’s telling your body to produce more and more and more to replenish what’s being washed away.

All you need to do is wash your face twice a day; when you take your bath in the morning and before going to bed with your cleanser.

  • Eat and Drink

The Right Way This is one tip that is not exclusive to a particular gender, as both males and females with oily skin should follow this to appropriately manage their bodies. Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water can greatly improve the state of your skin.

Ask yourself how often you see a man or woman with a remarkably radiant complexion eating fatty or oily food and taking lots of soft drinks? Cut down on salt and alcohol, and take more water. Swap the refined carbohydrates for wholegrains, sugar for fruits, fatty meats for alternative lean meats and see the wonders that will happen to your body.

Moisturising may seem like the wrong thing to do, especially since you will be adding more moisture to an oily face. The right moisturiser can however be good for your skin. Make use of a light, oil-free product that won’t block your pores but will be able to reduce that greasy shine on your forehead. Products labelled with words like ‘mattifying’ and ‘Vitamin C’ should be what you should be on the look out for.
